13A: Reading Reflection No. 1


Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, Ashlee Vance

1)
  • ·         What surprised the most:  Elon Musk worked relentlessly for Space X and Tesla. Elon Musk worked seven days a week which affected his marriage with Justine, his ex-wife. He was willing to sacrifice all of his time and effort for these two companies, even if they affected his personal life.
  • ·         What I admired the most:  what I admired the most is his persistent work with his companies. I believe that not everyone possess his mindset of aiming for the highest. In addition, I admired that he perceives humanity as a whole. He mentioned that the point of all of his work is to maximize the probable life span of humanity.
  • ·         What I least admired: Elon Musk could be sometimes rude to his employees. At times, he was categorized as a know-it-all and full of ego guy.
  • ·         Adversity and failure: Elon Musk faced numerous adversities and failure throughout his professional and personal career. From divorce to Space X’s failures to being ousted as the CEO of PayPal to not being able to fulfill the increasing demand from customers for Tesla’s automobiles.

                One of the competencies Elon Musk exhibited is that he has an intense passion in his personal interests. When Elon Musk is really interest in anything, he develops it and makes it work which is what differentiates him from the rest. He is very ambitious and passionate for what he wants to accomplish in his professional career.
3)
                One of the most confusing parts about the reading is that it was sometimes really hard to find specific information. Other than that, a well written and formatted book.
4)
                If I could ask two questions to Elon Musk would be:
  • ·         In moments of adversity and failure, how does he find the courage, energy, and confidence to continue with his projects because during those times is when most of businesses fail.
  • ·         How many hours he sleeps a night? Because he has an extremely hectic life. Does he even have any time for leisure?

5)
                I believe Musk’s opinion of hard work is a long and demanding search for improvement and innovation. I believe that Musk works relentlessly because he wants a brighter future for humanity.

    Hi Nicolas - I hope you are doing well. I really enjoyed reading your summary of Elon Musk's book about him being an entrepreneur. He is an amazing man with an amazing business. I think I read an article that said Elon Musk gets nearly no sleep - one night he stayed at a manufacturing plant for a whole week until things were done properly. Overall, I think you did a great job and I hope you enjoyed the book!

    Nicolas, I really enjoyed your discussion post. I think reading an autobiography on Elon Musk must have been extremely interesting, and it happened to be an autobiography I was considering reading too! I loved hearing your perspective on the book, what you admired and didn't. I also had a similar non admirable trait I found in Ray Kroc, the way he treated his employees. I guess sometimes it takes being a little "rude" to make it to the top.
