21A: Reading reflection No. 2
Book: How to fail at almost everything and still wing big—Scott Adams
· What was the general theme or argument of the book?
o The general theme of this book was to learn from failures throughout your life. Those failures will make you wiser and stronger which will lead you, ultimately, to win big. To achieve such success, Scott mentions that you must have a system, flexible schedule, and focus on your personal energy.
· How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
o This book and this class enable me to comprehend the value of a system. Scott states that your life should be based on a system instead of a goal. A system will provide you with a process to operate on a daily basis. Similarly, this class taught me that to be able to have a successful business, you must have a system that will assist you to reach your objectives. Such system is a path of failures and learning that eventually will lead you to success, or as Scott puts it, to win big.
· If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
o I would have students to create a post where they must mention everything they do in a day from the moment they wake up, to the moment they go to sleep. In addition, after they have completed a day of evaluation, they should reflect if their system is efficient and effective to ultimately reach their objectives.
· What was your biggest surprise or ‘aha’ moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
o My biggest surprise was how interesting this book actually was, coming from a guy who writes comic strips. I learned a lot from this book and changed my perspective on how I live my life. What I learned from this book that differed from my expectation was to put emphasis on my personal energy. I often find myself more concerned about how everyone else is doing, schoolwork, and literally anything else, but myself. I should focus more on myself first which will enable me to perform better on other factors of life.
Hi again - I hope you are doing well! I thought you did a really great job on this assignment. I enjoyed reading about your reflection on this book, and wish I read it too! I enjoyed reading about your biggest surprise, and I would say that I would probably say the same thing if I were to read that book. I thought your exercise idea of the class would be very interesting and engaging, and hopefully they can use it in later semesters! Great work.
